SolarAid's mission is that by 2030 no one will be left in the dark. 600 million people are living without electricity across sub-Saharan Africa. They have no choice but to rely on candles, poor quality torches and kerosene lamps to escape the dark. These filthy devices are imperilling health, impairing education, wasting income, and emitting astonishingly high amounts of carbon into the atmosphere – whilst putting lives in danger, every single night. With a solar light, everything changes. Each solar light has the following impact: - one whole household reached with clean, safe and affordable light - half the household experiencing better health with less eye and respiratory illness - 1.1 tonnes of CO2 averted from no longer burning kerosene or candles - 10% household income saved through no longer buying kerosene, candles or batteries - Children can do an extra hour of homework each night under safe, clean light. The latest projections are that by 2030, the deadline for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there will still be 600 million people left in the dark. We are determined to light the way for a brighter future. In 2019 SolarAid is launching innovative new programmes to reach the poorest and ensure that by 2030, no one is left in the dark.
