Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) aims to restore the ocean to heath by addressing overfishing, one of the world’s biggest environmental problems. BLUE is dedicated to creating marine reserves, restoring vital habitats and establishing models of sustainable fishing. BLUE’s mission is to see 30 per cent of the world’s ocean under effective protection by 2030.
Our oceans are in crisis. Marine life is under threat from climate change, acidification, pollution, invasive species and plastic. But arguably the greatest threat of all is from overfishing because oceans stripped of all their life will have even less resilience to the other threats. It is the complex web of marine life in the oceans that enables them to absorb as much as half the world’s carbon dioxide and produce half our oxygen. Overfishing therefore threatens the future of humanity. BLUE’s vision is a healthy ocean for ever, for everyone.BLUE's aim is to put at least 10% of ocean under protection by 2020 and over 30% by 2030. BLUE achieves its aim by delivering practical and efficient conservation solutions, focusing on the creation of large-scale marine reserves and establishment of sustainable fisheries so fish stocks can recover. BLUE concentrates on the following strategies:
1. We bring together sources of funding, governments and conservation expertise to catalyse the creation of vast marine protected areas.
2. We develop best-practice sustainable fisheries that demonstrate how livelihoods and ocean conservation go hand in hand.
3. Through reports, films, articles, images and presentations, we draw attention to the crisis in the oceans and demonstrate how it can be solved.
